Panama Rocks, New York

Tucked away in Chautauqua County, New York is a hidden gem for outdoors enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. I came upon Panama Rocks after seeing a brochure at a hotel I was staying at in Erie, Pennsylvania. The photo’s stunning views and opportunity to explore freely was enough for me to take the 40 minute drive to Panama Rocks.

Going in I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the laid back atmosphere and freedom that you are given to explore every nook, cranny, and pathway (marked or not). Right from the start you are given the opportunity to take the natural path or climb down the rock ravine which leads to multiple caverns, hole, and spaces that are far from other visitors (During our entire trek we may have seen three or four other groups in passing), even if you do run into other people there are opportunities galore to go down another path, climb into a rock side, or climb up to avoid others. It was easy to get swept up in the various places to explore, never really knowing what was going to be at every drop and corner.

Panama Rocks is a natural one-mile loop with a half-mile ridge of rock formations. What makes this location unique is that visitors are encouraged to go off the trail and explore any of the caverns, openings, pathways, or grounds that they desire. Obviously, you have to sign a release before entering the park but once there you will not see any other staff or individuals minus other hikers and climbers like yourself. There are no formal walkways or general structure, simply small signs posted on trees to let you know generally where you are at. There is also no time constraint, as long as you are out by closing time you can spend as much or as little time as you want. The admission for Panama Rocks is only $8.00 per person and has free parking.

Bonus Side Quest: Southern Tier Brewery

While in the area I highly recommend stopping at Southern Tier Brewery in Lakewood, New York (less than 15 minutes away).  Those who love pumpkin craft beers probably know this brewery for the Pumking line but they are also home to an assortment of unique IPA’s, sours, ciders…etc. Enjoy this laid backed breweries back patio, play a game of stones, watch live music, and eat some delicious beer infused food while socializing with friends.
