7 Must Visit Locations in Inveress, Scotland

Scotland is the land of stunning mountain views, enchanting Lochs, and mythical creatures that have lasted the test of time. Amongst one of the most popular cities in Scotland is Inverness. The heart of the highlands, Inverness is a truly enchanting location that will stay in your heart for years to come.

  1. Loch Ness is easily one of the most legendary locations in Scotland due to one of its most famous cryptoids, the Loch Ness Monster. Personally, my favorite of the mysterious world creatures was a reason for me to visit this specific location. Once arriving at the Loch it’s easy to understand why Nessie aside, this is one of the most popular locations to visit in Inverness. With stretching black waters and stunning mountain backdrops this locale is truly a sight to behold. No matter how you decide to enjoy Loch Ness by boat, kayak, or land you will be welcomed with the natural beauty of the highlands.
  2. Clava Cairn is one of Invernesses hidden gems. This labyrinth of rock is much more than it appears from the outside. Clava Cairn is home to  multiple Bronze Age relics including a cemetery with various passage graves, two types of cairns (ring and kerb) and standing stones which are all displayed against the breathtaking highlands settings.
  3. Ness Islands is one of the best held secrets by the locals when it comes to scenic nature views on a short walk from the city of Inverness. The Ness Islands are a collection of natural land formations in the middle of river Ness. While walking through these islands you feel as though you are being transported to a magical place, with sweeping trees, rushing black waters, and lamp posts that look like they are something straight out of Narnia. Another aspect of this locale that is fun especially for those who are fans of the Loch Ness Monster is that throughout the park there are multiple wooden carved tributes to Nessie hidden (often in the form of benches) for visitors to locate throughout their enchanting hike.
  4. Culloden Moor,  for those who have an interest in Scottish history or the outlander series the location of Culloden is a fairly well known location. Home to one of the highlands most infamous and deadly battles Culloden is an eerie reminder of how easily a culture can almost be wiped out from existence in tyranny. For those who want to learn more about the battle the extensive museum can give you an insider’s view into the world of the jacobite war. My personal favorite location was the actual moor which is a stunning  tribute to all of the individuals that lost their lives during this time. In addition there is also the Highland flare of the Highland cows which graze upon the Moor.
  5. Leaky Bookstore is one of my new obsessions when visiting Inverness, to say that I am a bibliophile may be an understatement. There is nothing that makes me quite as happy as an old book, let alone an entire building of old books. This stunning multiple floor bookstore has a vast collection of books that range from classic literature to local interests. This bookstore is a fantasy for those who love books, with bookshelves that reach the ceiling and piles of books lining the floor this treasure trove is the ultimate stop for book lovers.
  6. Inverness Castle is arguably one of the most significant landmarks in the city, with a long history that dates back to the medieval period. Most know this castle from the famous Shakespear play Macbeth. This stunning castle oversees the Ness River and is truly as stunning from the riverwalk as it is up close.Though visitors currently can not go inside the castle (this is planning to change in the next few years, since it is being turned into a tourist attraction) the stunning grounds are worth a short visit alone.
  7. Ness Walk is one of my favorite parts of Inverness. We were lucky enough to be staying at a hotel on the walk (The Columba) so we walked through different portions of pathways throughout our visit. This nearly two mile waterway is completely stunning with the nearly black water that you will find from Loch Ness billowing its way down the city. While walking through this area you will be welcomed with various landmarks like Inverness Castle, handcrafted bridges, statues, greenery, shops, and parks.
